The Making of the Eritrean Constitution
The Making of the Eritrean Constitution by Bereket Habte Selassie
After gaining independence, Eritreans engaged for the first time as a sovereign people in drafting their constitution, regarded as the culmination of their struggle for self-determination. Written by Bereket Habte Selassie, who led the Constitutional Commission of Eritrea from 1994-1997, the book analyzes the intensive public debates held across villages and towns over those 3 years that helped shape the final constitution. Selassie argues a good constitution depends on public participation in its drafting, hence his attention to Eritrea’s process. In addition to narrating the drafting, he also provides chapter-by-chapter analysis and commentary on the constitution itself.
