The Bureaucratic Empire - Serving Emperor Haile Selassie
The Bureaucratic Empire - Serving Emperor Haile Selassie by Seyoum Haregot
Dr. Seyoum Haregot worked in the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs starting in 1957, later serving as Minister, Head of the Prime Minister’s Office, and member of the Council of Ministers under Prime Minister Akllilou Habtewold and Emperor Haile Selassie. He documents the administrative and legislative efforts from 1957-1974 to reform the Ethiopian government and the resistance faced from the aristocracy. He provides a firsthand account of the failure to bring peaceful reform that resulted in the violent revolution and bloodshed that overthrew Haile Selassie. After being detained by the Dergue regime from 1974-1982, Dr. Seyoum taught law and worked internationally before serving on Eritrea’s Constitutional Commission helping draft and translate their 1997 constitution.
