Nakfa - September 1976 to March 1988
Nakfa - September 1976 to March 1988 by Solomon Berhe, Akeder Ahmedin, Shumwendi Oqbamichael
This book, written in Tigrinya, is a compilation of stories during the armed struggle for independence of Eritrea focusing on the historically and geographically strategic town of Nakfa.
Nakfa has become the symbol of resistance and resilience because of its significance during the revolution. Once ceased by EPLF in 1978, the Ethiopian government could not re-capture it again until the liberation of Eritrea in 1991. The frontline that was established in 1978 after the retreat of EPLF from the central highlands remained unchanged until 1988 when EPLF switched from its defensive stance and made a full-blown frontal attack from this strategic place, which resulted in the liberation of Eritrea 3 years later.
Once Eritrea became independent in 1993, the Eritrean government chose to name its currency “Nakfa” to signify the role of Nakfa in the history of the nation.
