Massacre at Wekidiba - The Tragic Story of a Village in Eritrea
Massacre at Wekidiba - The Tragic Story of a Village in Eritrea by Habtu (Fr. Athanasius) Ghebre-Ab
This book documents the massacres that took place in the Eritrean village of Wekidiba in 1975 and again in 1976 during Eritrea’s war for independence from Ethiopia.
The author, Professor Habtu Ghebre-Ab, interviewed nearly four dozen survivors and eyewitnesses across three continents over six years to reconstruct the story of what happened to the residents of Wekidiba.
The book aims to memorialize the victims and contribute to reconciliation between the peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea who have both suffered under tyranny.
Professor Ghebre-Ab has written extensively on the history of Ethiopia and Eritrea. He was ordained as an Eritrean Orthodox priest in 2010, taking on the name Fr. Athanasius. This book represents a first step toward dialogue and transparency about the dark periods of violence in the two countries’ shared history.
