A Confederate Soldier in Egypt
A Confederate Soldier in Egypt by General William Wing Loring
This book is a memoir by General William Wing Loring, a Confederate officer who, after the close of the American Civil War, offered his military services to foreign rulers, including his mission to Abyssinia as part of the Egyptian army. He writes about his meeting and speaking with Raesi Woldemichael Solomon, the Duke of Mereb Mellash, during the latter’s rebellion from Yohannes IV of Abyssinia, whom he refers to as just Kassa, his pre-coronation name.
Loring became one of many Confederate emigres to settle in Egypt, where he served the Khedive. He was made a Pasha in recognition of his honorable and efficient service. Having lived in Egypt for many years and attained an intimate understanding of the country and leadership, Loring drew on his experiences to write a clear, authoritative account of life in Egypt during his time there. As an intelligent observer with special access and opportunities, he provides interesting insights and facts about Egypt not available to the average outside traveler.
